Cephalosporins are both synthetic and natural antibiotic derivatives of cephalosporin C, made from fungus, but chemically altered to produce an antibiotic. These derivatives are collectively called cephalosporins. They are structurally related to penicillin, like penicillin, cephalosporins interfere with the synthesis of the cell wall. Cephalosporins have a wide spectrum of bacteria they can destroy. As a broad category, they are active against gram positive bacteria, some gram-negative bacteria, and some anaerobic bacteria. They are not able to kill viruses or fungi. Cephalosporins have been divided into four categories according to their different antimicrobial activity.
