In the “Prologue” to Canterbury Tales there is an analysis of each character on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. Through the characterizations of the church officials Chaucer critiques the 14th century church in England. Chaucer believes the church is operating in a wrong and corrupt way. Most of the church officials were corrupt and concerned only about this material world, instead of the afterlife. These church officials were arguably the most corrupt people on the pilgrimage. This corruption is a problem because if the church is corrupt then all the people who follow the church are led in the wrong path then what they should be led in.
