Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is to allow biologists to become familiar with the molecular database, Swiss-Prot of the amino acid sequences. Also, to compare the amino acid chains of many different species of animals to determine how closely related they are. This will give an understanding to the limits of molecular and morphological data. The Swiss-Port database: http://www.expasy.ch/sprot/. There, a list of animals are located, these will be entered into LALIGN (logical Alignments) to determine how closely related two species are together. Also it will be entered into BLAST (Best Local Alignment Search Tool) to find species that are closely related to it.
