Philip Pirip (Pip) is torn between his past and his future. He has the opportunity to excel and become something great, but to do that he must leave behind his sister and brother-in-law. He has to leave behind his apprenticeship to his brother-in-law, Joe, who is a blacksmith, in order to go to London to acquire great property and wealth. His struggle came from his past and his family and the poor background that he came from, versus his new opportunity for greatness.
