Laurent Clerc was a major contributor to the development of the American Sign Language we use today. Without the ability to hear, Clerc became destined to overcome his disability and learn to communicate through the use of signs and gestures. It wasn’t too clear whether Clerc was born deaf or not, but it likely that his hearing and sense of smell were damaged from an accident he had as a baby. Several efforts were made to restore Laurent’s hearing, which all failed, leaving many people with a sense that he would never learn anything.
