At first glance, the story line of Deadly Unna? seems quite simple. One might say that it’s about a “teenager’s developing awareness of racial prejudice and what he does about it.” This is true, but if we subscribe to the novel’s hidden agenda, Deadly Unna? is about so much more. Blacky’s “awareness of racial prejudice and what he does about it” merely provides a vehicle for a number of more complex themes and lessons. If truth be told, Deadly Unna? is mostly about family and friendship, human dignity, responsibility, courage, justice and death.
