In this document, we will examine recent studies and how they relate to the
evolving theories surrounding the causes and treatment for Post Partum Depression in the 21st century. Everything from psychological to pharmaceutical interventions will be discussed and evaluated.
Approximately, 50% of women who have given childbirth suffer from PPD blues, immediately, postpartally. Postnatal blues is “A heightened state of emotional
reactivity” due to hormonal equilibration associated with the post delivery period. (Miller, 2002) Nearly 13% of mothers suffer from postpartum depression after
their child’s delivery. Post partum blues are most often left unidentified and untreated, in
part, because the sadness spontaneously resolves
