Case Analysis: Ann Hopkins
Ann Hopkins was a senior manager in the national accounting firm of Price Waterhouse in their Washington D.C. office who was nominated for partnership in August 1982, but was placed on “hold” status in March 1983 by the admissions committee. She was ultimately advised (in December 1983) that she would not be re-proposed for partnership. At that point she considered four options: 1) leave the firm, 2) transfer to the international area, 3) continue in her senior manager role, or 4) quit and file a lawsuit charging sex discrimination. Presumably, she chose the fourth option.
