One would not want to be a criminal in sixteenth century England. The punishment extorted on criminals were extremely harsh, and by today standards, the punishments were inhumane and too sever. During the time of rising humanism, Sir Thomas More showed an alternative method for punishing criminals in his Utopia.
Criminals in the sixteenth century are comparable to criminals today. Acts of injustice to another person like murder, robbery, and rape were considered crimes and punishable. Begging was considered a crime for an able-bodied person over the age of fourteen. One who begged, but was physically or mentally disable, was tolerated to a degree.
