Sekouba Camara was born in Guinea, West Africa in 1941 and began dancing and drumming in village festivals and ceremonies as soon as he could walk. His love of dance became his profession when the director of Ballet Djoliba recognized his talent and recruited him as an artist in the ensemble. He remained with the company for over a decade before becoming the lead dancer for Les Ballets Africains. He was eventually granted the prestigious title of Director of Ballet Djoliba and Les Ballets Africains, Guinea’s National Dance Ensembles. Sekouba Camara is indisputably the world’s foremost authority on traditional Soussou and Mandingue dance.
