Heinemann's dictionary defines satire as "the use of mocking or exaggerated humour to ridicule faults and vices". Satire was used by one of England's greatest satirists in the 18th century: Jane Austen. Northanger Abbey didn't actually appear until after Austen's death, but in "Northanger Abbey" she satirises the common idiosy of her time as well as the Gothic novel.
