In the passage from The Two Towers, Gandalf the wizard comes back from the abyss and darkness, emerging no longer as Gandalf the Grey, but as the White Rider. Gandalf brings with him Erkenbrand, lord of Westfold, and a thousand men. These were reinforcements to hold back the attacks and armies of Sauron.
The point of view, tone, and voice affected the credibility of the text in this passage by having it become more uplifting and shocking. The whole of The Lord of the Rings is told by an anonymous, third-person omniscient narrator.
