The African wild ass is found in hilly and stony deserts, and arid to semi-arid bush lands and grasslands. They like to avoid sandy areas and have always stayed away from the sandy dune regions of the Sahara. The must always be able to have access to water. The wild ass is well adapted to living in low areas in the desert. It can quickly digest tough grasses and move quickly from one grazing location to another. They are usually active in the cooler hours between late afternoon and early morning, seeking shade and shelter among the rocky hills during the day. In their rocky habitats, the African wild ass has been clocked at 50 kmph / 30 mph!
