Throughout history the United States has been a land of refuge and opportunity for immigrants. People from all over the world have moved to the United States searching for new and better opportunities. These people went to the United States with a hope of freedom and a better life, but when they arrived they had new hardships to overcome. In the beginning immigrants were discriminated against, looked down upon, and given the poor jobs. Two of the types of immigrants were the Chinese and the Scotch-Irish. The Chinese predominately came to the United States in the nineteenth century and arrived in the west. The Scotch-Irish came before the Chinese in the eighteenth century, and stayed mostly in the Appalachian frontier.
