In 1993, Eli Lilly’s Manufacturing Strategy Committee had to make a decision regarding the type of manufacturing plants to construct for three new products that were expected to launch in 1996. Steve Mueller the manager of strategic facilities planning was given the task to evaluate the options and propose the path forward to the committee.
In the past, new drugs could enjoy two to three years of single source pricing prior to competitive products hitting the market. This time was now reduced significantly due to generic and similar drugs being introduced.
