Lord of the Flies comparison with Heart of Darkness
The Characters of Kurtz and the Narrator were very similar in some ways to the characters of Jack and Ralph in Lord of the Flies. Jack and Kurtz represent insanity and anarchy while the Narrator and Ralph represent sanity and control. Although Kurtz is insane to begin with in Heart of Darkness and Jack takes until about a quarter of the way through the book to show his mental instability. Both the Narrator and Ralph start off completely sane but slowly becomes more and more mentally unsound. Throughout the novel the narrator goes through a lot, he leaves the civilized world of Europe behind and plunges right into Africa. This sudden transition between civilization and the wild is common in both books.
