The book starts out with a very famous line in English literature. “It is truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. This means that any man that is wealthy wants a wife. The irony in this is that we all know that this is not true. The book takes place in 19th century England. During this time it was very important for a woman to get married. It was even better if you could attract the wealthy and get married to them. In the first chapter of the book, a very rich bachelor of the name Mr. Bingley moves into a wealthy estate near the Bennett’s house.
