Welles also collaborated with experimental cinematographer Gregg Toland, who had pioneered the technique of deep focus - in which everything within a scene was in focus from front to back. It was therefore necessary to use composition and mise en scene in order to attract the attention of the audience. It allowed the director much more creative input in the film.
