A significant concern in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is the degree of responsibility Oedipus has for committing incest and killing Laius, an act which leads to his downfall as King of Thebes. The all-knowing gods determine his patricide and incest long before he commits them. It is partially his parents’ actions that result in him not knowing who his true parents are and hence, he commits those sins unknowingly. However, he is not fully responsible for his actions, as there are other factors accountable for his destruction that he has no control over. This downfall is due to his rashness, over-curiosity, and his disrespect for the god’s predictions.
