Life on a Freeway:Analysis of May Swensons Life on a Freeway
Automobiles are great inventions, but it seems like we spend half our lives inside of them on the freeway. May Swenson relates a humorous side of life in an automobile in her poem “Southbound on the Freeway” by seeing it through the eyes of a visitor from another star system.
The narrative is spoken by a “tourist” (line 1) from another planet. He arrives from “Orbitville” (1) and “park[s] in the air” (2). The tourist observes our planet for the first time. The narrator begins by describing the inhabitants of this star. They “are made of metal and glass” (4).
Through further description, it becomes apparent to the reader that the alien believes we are a race of cars.
