Metalloids are a group of elements that display properties of metals and nonmetals. There are seven metalloids. Five of the seven metalloids were discovered in the last three hundred years. Arsenic and Antimony were known to ancient civilizations. The metalloid elements are found in The Periodic Table, along a stair-step line that separates metals and nonmetals. Metalloids have a wide variety of uses, ranging from computer chips to explosives to breast augmentations.
Five of the seven metalloids were discovered between one hundred and three hundred years ago, while the last two were known to ancient civilizations. Arsenic, an element discovered in ancient times, takes its name from the Greek word arsenikon, meaning yellow orpiment.
