In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story”Young Goodman Brown,” Brown embarked on a journey through the dark forest where he eventually discovered the “truth.” Toward the end the discovery caused him to be withdrawal from his religion and the people around him, his wife in particular.
One of the first thing Goodman Brown discovered that caused him to be withdrawal and gloomy was the discovery that his father and grandfather were “friends” with the devil. “They (referring to Goodman’s father and grandfather) were my good friends, both; and many a pleasant walk have we had along this path, and returned merrily after midnight.”(82) Goodman Brown described himself as “a simple husbandman” and Hawthorne portrayed Brown as a religious man (a Puritan)
