Eveline is a frightened, indecisive young woman who gets trapped between her past and the possibility of a better future. In the majority of the story she is sitting motionless by the window. The immobility of this situation shows similarity to Evelin’s life. Nothing changes around her and she seems to have a rather plain life. And now that she has the opportunity to choose a happier life, with a man who loves and respects her, she still looks as if she was unable to make her decision. She is paralyzed, she just can’t move. It is only her thoughts that keep moving between the two possibilities, from one side to the other then back again and again.
