Over 6000 brave Canadian soldiers died on April 22, 1915, due to
what was known as the second battle of Ypres. German troops had
opened the valves of 5730 canisters of chlorine gas when they surrounded
the Allied troops on three sides. The Germans had decided to use a never
before tested weapon, chlorine gas, on Canadian and French-Algerian
forces.
Even after getting a warning that gas could be used, Allied
Commands choose to not fit their men with the proper equipment such as
gas masks, which they would need to stand their ground. Fortunately some
Canadian soldiers had been told by their medical officers that if they
urinated on their handkerchiefs that the gas would crystallize and become
neutral.
