Cholinergic synapses are important not only in the central nervous system (CNS) but also at peripheral autonomic nervous system (ANS) ganglia, somatic neuromuscular junctions, parasympathetic nerve endings, and the enteric nervous system (ENS). The primary neurotransmitter at these junctions, acetylcholine (ACh), was one of the first neurotransmitters discovered. Originally called "vagusschtuff", it was found to be the substance released by stimulation of the vagus nerve that altered heart muscle contractions.
