Galileo: Heretic?

To find out whether or not Galileo was a heretic we must first work out what exactly a heretic is. Traditionally a heretic is defined as one who practises or even just believes in the notion of heresy. This means someone who goes against, and holds opinions opposed to, the traditional religious doctrine generally held up to be the truth by the majority of people. Therefore, is it fair to match this description up to Galileo and label him as a heretic? Indeed, as a child his father had a taste for radical thought and so Galileo grew up removed from medievalist attitudes.
