The mass has changed over the many years it has existed. It is has morphed into many differing shapes and sizes whilst still maintaining its roots and general structure of the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus et Benedictus and Agnus Dei – the Christian Ordinary. By adding music to the religious texts, composers enabled a congregation to worship in a more accessible way and increase the levels of understanding and the attractiveness of Christianity. However from the day in the 16th Century when the first musical setting of the mass was heard which did not consist solely of a tenor plainsong, a whole new light was shed on how the Christian church might practice for many years to come.
