James Watt and his contibution to the age of steam
|
James watt was born in Greenock near Glasgow. He worked as a mathematical instrument maker and in 1757 was appointed to a post at Glasgow University, where he continued to make scientific instruments. Watt had taken a keen interest in steam engines and studied them closely. It was by pure chance that in 1763 watt was given the opportunity to his learning to practical use when he was asked to repair a model of Newcomens atmospheric engine.
Newcomens engine worked by using atmospheric pressure to move the piston down the cylinder, steam from the boiler entered the cylinder, causing (but not forcing) the piston to rise when it reached the top, cold water was fed into the cylinder, causing the steam to condense, this created a partia
