Browning’s monologues consist of an uninterrupted narrative, spoken by a single character, to a specific audience. The speaker is not Browning himself, but a persona that the he has created. Browning creates a living, breathing human being, with a complex history and view of the world quite easily.
‘My Last Duchess’ is about a duke; he is speaking to a non-responding representative of the family of a prospective new duchess. It reveals the reasons for his disapproval of the behaviour of his former duchess and also aspects of his own personality.
