SBC Communications although a fairly new name, has been in the communications business for over 120 years. Until 1984 AT&T controlled almost all telecommunications in the U.S. Then , because of the monopoly control the company had over phone service, it was broken-up. The local Bell phone companies were divided up among seven, managerially created, very large companies called Regional Bell Operating Companies . SBC Communications, is a compilation of several of these companies including: Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell, Ameritech, SNET(Southern New England Telephone). Other companies and alliances have since been added to make up SBC including Cingular Wireless, Echostar!, and SBCyahoo!.
