Billy Budd is well liked, and widely admired among his fellow sailors on the Rights-of-Man, yet he does not have any great intelligence or self-awareness. The narrator emphasizes that although Billy has a good influence on other people, he lacks a moral sense of value. He does not have the experience or know-how to be a moral role model even though he has a good heart. The narrator also describes Billy by comparing him to animals and primitive men even though he also tells us that Billy is of noble standards.
