Susan grabs a bite to eat at the drive through. She digs for her last $4.75, counting out dimes and quarters. “Good thing tomorrow is payday!” she thinks. She is reminded that she needs to make a double payment on her car this month because she missed last month’s payment due to the $350 transmission repair. Maybe she can get some extra hours at the warehouse—her second job, which she works in the evenings and weekends. Tonight her son will ask her for $45 for a field trip, the library will call demanding $18.50 for the book her daughter lost, and her landlord will grow impatient and serve a thirty-day eviction notice.
