This question asks how it can be that in transferring our rights and power to the general will and the public good we are effectively also retaining our rights and freedom. In this essay I am going to interpret how individuals obey no one else while they are sacrificing their personal freedom. I will later explain how personal freedom effects the men who are guided by their natural selfishness and how the particular will manifests after this. Through doing so, it will be possible to explain how the particular will stands in contradiction to the general will.
