1. Four Major Types of Membranes
a) Serous Membranes
i. Line body cavities
ii. Inner lining of thorax (parietal pleura)
iii. Abdomen (parietal peritoneum)
· Simple squamous epithelium and thin layer of connective tissue
· Cells of serous membranes secrete watery serous fluid, which lubricates membrane surfaces
b) Mucous Membranes
i. Line cavities and tubes that open to the outside of the body
ii. Include oral and nasal cavities, tubes of digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems
· Epithelium overlying a layer of loose connective tissue
· Specialized cells within the mucous membrane secrete mucous
