Bad faith is the notion of self deception, a lie to oneself. Bad faith exists when one does not recognize their facticity as well as their transcendence. When we are engaged in bad faith we are avoiding responsibility for our actions. Sartre gives an example of this with the case of the woman on a first date that doesn’t want to appear fast. He puts her hand into his and she lets it remain there. She fails to acknowledge in her mind this action has certain intentions behind it. At this point her hand is connected with his and they are being intimate. She believes that she did nothing to bring about this situation so she isn’t being fast with him. But one has to look at her leaving her hand in his is an action, just as much as taking
