Police
On the 29th of September 1829 a new style of policemen where present in Whitehall, London. These men were members of ‘The new police’ or ‘Peelers’. Nowadays we take the police for granted, if we were to try and imagine a life without police it would be very hard. Until the first few years of the Victorian era life was very different.
All throughout history people have been employed to uphold the law from the times of King Alfred (871-899 AD) policing happened through a court system known as the ‘Folk moot’. “The first statutory mention of the word ‘constable’ is in 1252; the derivation of the term is generally regarded as being ‘comes stabuli’ meaning ‘master of the horse.” (Found on http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/v3/abo
