The Irish republic became independent in 1922 but the northern part of the island was not a part of the new state. In 6 north easterly counties there was a majority that wanted to remain a part of the United Kingdom because they were Protestants. Most Irish are Catholic but in Northern Ireland many Scottish and English Protestants immigrated in the course of time. They didn’t want to be a minority in a united Ireland that was dominated by the Catholic Church. Since 1922 the Protestant population has ruled Ireland.
