In the famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy (III.i), Hamlet concludes that no one would choose to tolerate the pain of life if they were not afraid of what will come after death. It is that fear which causes complex moral considerations to interfere with the ability of action. In Hamlet’s third soliloquy, Hamlet struggles with the consideration of suicide along with the consideration of murdering Claudius. His famous line, “To be or not to be” can be taken in several different ways; ‘to die or not to die’, which goes along with ‘to live or not to live’, but the line could also be taken as ‘to act or not to act’.
