Oedipus the King: A Victim of Fate and Hamartia
|
The story of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is a powerful work of drama. Sophocles catches and heightens the drama by revealing events moments before and after Oedipus’s realization. This play achieves the catharsis that Aristotle speaks of by showing the reader a man not unlike themselves, but a man who is great but not perfect. He is a good father, husband, and son and yet he unwillingly destroys his parents, wife and children. Oedipus’s circumstances are attributed to fate because of the oracle prophecies and also hamartia, a tragic flaw in Oedipus’s character.
