Machiavelli believed the ruling Prince should be the sole authority determining every aspect of the state and put in effect a policy to serve his best interests. The prince should strive to maintain and expand his political power. A prince can gain power through fortune or ability, but either way, he should be the founder and leader of a strong republic.
