The difference between The Degenerate Art Exhibition of 1937 and The Robert Mapplethorpe Exhibit at the James Corcoran Gallery is that one was thought to be an immoral art, and the other is considered to be an “obscene art.”
The Degenerate Art Exhibition was opened by the National Socialist in 1937 (Entartete Kusnf). The exhibition has over a collection of 650 paintings, sculptures, and prints from over 30 public museums. The Nazis confiscated these modern arts from over 200 artists. According to Stephanie Barron, “the works were assembled for the purpose of clarifying for the German public by defamation and derision exactly what type of modern art was unacceptable to the Reich and thus un-German”(McAllister).
