The small ships sailed gently towards the unknown westward expanse. Christopher Columbus was the leader of this small caravan across the vast Atlantic Ocean, and soon enough he would strike land. On October 28, 1492, the Spaniard struck land. He quickly named the land Juana, after the daughter of Ferdinand V and Isabella I of Spain. Although this was the first name of the newly discovered island, a lot more names were going to be given to it. Other names included Hispanola, and even the name of it’s present day capital, Havana. It soon took on a variation of its original native name of Cubanascan, Cuba. The island was claimed for the Spain and very soon became an important supply location and set off point for exhibitions into Mexico
