In the play “Oedipus” the main character is bound to a prophecy set upon him as a small child, that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Although his destiny was unavoidable Oedipus had many character flaws that led to his downfall. He is vain, egotistical, easily angered, impatient, rash, and impulsive. Although all of these traits contribute, his vanity and impatience are his most serious and damaging flaws.
His vanity is demonstrated first in the story when he arrives at the kingdom and responds to the people:
“I deemed it unfit my children to hear these things at the mouth of others voices when I have come her myself renound of all.”
