How The Island Got Its Name:
The name Alcatraz comes from the Spanish word "Alcatraces." This is because in 1775, a spanish explorer named Juan Manuel de Ayala became the very first man to sail into what is now called San Francisco Bay. It was during this time that de Ayala named one of the three islands discovered by him Alcatraces. After many years, the name was Anglicized to its current name of Alcatraz, which means "pelican" or "strange bird.”
