Emphysema is in the category of several lung diseases termed Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It is a condition in which there is over
inflammation of structures in the lungs known as the alveoli. Emphysema begins with the destruction of the alveoli, which are actually air sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place. As air sacs are destroyed, the lungs are less and less able to transfer oxygen to the bloodstream. The lungs begin to lose their elasticity, which interferes with proper opening of airways. Therefore, shortness of breath increases, and exhaling becomes a very difficult thing to do. People who are affected with emphysema are generally males between the ages of 50-70 years old.
