Today, politicians and social scientists alike lament the apparent loss of family values in the United States. With family models such as the gay or single parent household, many fear the “breakdown” of the traditional American family and believe it to be a sign of an equal decline in morality. In this essay I would like to show that what we are facing today is not the breakdown of the family but merely a change in family forms.
