Cause
The cause of depression is not well understood. Depression has chemical (physical or biological) causes, genetic (hereditary) causes, and environmental or psychological (mental or emotional) causes.
Chemical/biological causes
An imbalance in any one of several neurotransmitter systems can result in depression. One of these systems, the serotinergic, is involved in the processing of thoughts and emotions. If there is an imbalance between serotonin and its receptors, an episode of depression can occur.
Genetic causes
Children and adolescents whose parents have experienced depression are 3 times more likely to develop depression than children with nondepressed parents.6 However, it is not clear whether genetics are entirely respons
