Imagery is used to help describe figurative language through literary works. The two authors that do a remarkable job with deep imagery are Elizabeth Bishop and Ernest Hemingway. As the descriptive words flow from line to line, one begins to get the vivid picture in one’s mind about the content within the literary work. Elizabeth Bishop’s “The Fish” and Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man by The Sea” are two literary works that use imagery to describe a “fish.” Hemingway’s male fisherman is in desperate need to catch a fish. This Cuban Fisherman named Santiago is a tormented man because he has not caught a fish in eighty-four days.
