The story starts with a young boy who is with his uncle and they are told to hurry to the town square. The weather is horrible but all the towns people have still gathered to watch the “nigger” be tormented in the square in front of the court house. The towns people were yelling terrible comments toward the man and some were even touching him and taking clothing off. The man had been dragged to the square on the back of a towns persons truck and people were gathered to watch the man be burned. The circle of fire had been moved to under the man so that he could begin to burn away. The man was moaning. As the crowd of people were watching the man die noises coming from the sky distracted them. A plane flew down extremely low knocking
