Matisse, Henri (1869–1954) drew The Italian Woman in 1916
and used oil on canvas. This painting contains several versions. He
often painted the same subject in versions that range from relatively
realistic to more abstract. At times the transition from realism to
abstraction could be enacted in a single canvas, as is the case with
The Italian Woman.
The first of many portraits Matisse painted of a professional Italian
model named Laurette. From the earlier state of the portrait, which
depicts a heavier woman, Matisse pared down Laurette’s image, to
make her less bodily and more elegance. Because he used a frontal
pose, introspective face, and flat back-ground, we can see a religious
